How does the Master Electrician exam work?

The Master Electrician exam is a TDLR license exam given by PSI. TDLR approves your application first, then you schedule with PSI and have one year from the application date to pass.

  • The PSI exam has two portions: 75 NEC knowledge items in 150 minutes and 33 calculation items in 170 minutes.
  • The exam fee is $78 for both portions and the TDLR application fee is $45.
  • TDLR licenses Texas electricians, and PSI gives every exam with a 70 percent passing score on each portion.
  • Since September 1, 2026, the exams are written to the 2026 National Electrical Code, the edition Texas adopted on July 28, 2026.
  • The exams are open book: bring a soft-bound NEC, highlighted and noted before the exam, with only the publisher's permanent index tabs. Homemade and other tabs are not allowed.
  • Licenses renew every year with 4 hours of continuing education covering the NEC, Texas electrician law and rules, and NFPA 70E.

Which Master Electrician option should I choose?

The Study Guide at $59.95 is the lightest way into the Master Electrician exam: the printed study guide with practice exams. The Online Exam Prep Course at $129.95 adds timed practice you can run on a phone between jobs. The Study Package with NEC Course at $499.95 is the most complete option: the study package plus an instructor-led NEC course.

Do I need the 2023 or the 2026 NEC?

The 2026 NEC. Texas adopted it on July 28, 2026, and PSI exams have been written to it since September 1, 2026. Packages built on the 2023 NEC are still listed for anyone finishing up, but the 2026 editions match the current exam.
